Uses
It is mainly used as a reducing agent and developing agent. In organic synthesis, it is used to prepare oximes. It is also used as a raw material for the synthesis of anticancer drugs (hydroxyurea), sulfonamides (sulfamethoxazole), and pesticides (methomyl). In electroanalysis, it serves as a depolarizer; in the synthetic rubber industry, it is used as a non-staining short-term stopper. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as an intermediate for sulfamethoxazole. In the synthetic dye industry, it is used to prepare isatin intermediates. In the oil and fat industry, it acts as an antioxidant and anti-aging agent for fatty acids and soaps. In analytical chemistry, it is used as a reducing agent for the analysis of formaldehyde, furfural, camphor, and glucose. It is also used as a depolarizer in electrochemical analysis, for the determination of magnesium in steel, microanalysis of sulfonic acids and fatty acids, and the detection and analysis of aldehydes and ketones. It is also used in the processing and printing of color films.
Safety,Security&Risk
It slowly decomposes upon contact with moisture and releases toxic fumes when heated. It decomposes upon heating with a risk of explosion. Its aqueous solution is a weak acid.It corrodes many metals.
